WELCOME TO BARBERMONGER
WHAT IS BARBERMONGER?

BARBERMONGER is a site designed to help roleplayers find other roleplayers, specifically one-on-one roleplayers, as opposed to larger roleplay games. Functioning like a pinboard, BARBERMONGER allows users to create advertisements, bump advertisements, and respond to other advertisements, without requiring them to register an account. However, registering an account will allow you to edit your posts, find your own topics, and use the private messaging system.

Hello all, I’m back for a little bit more…
If you’ve contacted me before or we once had a roleplay and you want to start/reignite something, let me know!

About me – I am 24 years old, female, living in the UK, a full-time student and soon to be working over the summer but for now with nothing to do.
In the most ideal situation, the roleplay would flourish and go long term.

While I have a loose idea in mind for the “first arc” of a prehistoric roleplay at the bottom, I am happy to hear alternatives to that or suggestions for a medieval fantasy rp (surprise me). I also do have a handful of medieval fantasy plots I've posted here before, but as I've also got some roleplays going with them, I'd prefer to not reuse them again...though it might be an option if you're intrigued.

Yes please:

+ Large casts of characters, divided between us.
+ Plenty of communication between us (IM is ideal for this) though I am wholly understanding of any commitments you may have
+ Worldbuilding and all that goes with it. Moodboards, drawing, music that inspires you…anything. I love the whole process.
+ If romance and/or sex crops up, I’d prefer mxf
+ Third person in past tense

No thank you:
- Only playing one gender, or almost always playing one gender
- Smut centred plots (as much as I love smut now and then)
- Contacting me without telling me your limits, what interests you or any idea(s) you might have, be that a character or a plot. Give me something to work with smile.gif
- Obligations for long posts. I enjoy writing and reading a good long post from time to time, but it has to come from a feeling of inspiration, not a word count to be met…
- Fandoms
- You are not 18+

Limits
I have a few things I will not explicitly roleplay out; scat, bestiality or children in sexual situations. They could however be mentioned as part of a character’s background, though I have not yet encountered that.
Besides this, everything is game and I prefer not to fade to black unless the scene would be tedious/irrelevant. Yet, as I often say in my ads, it’s not a “to-do list of depravity” – plausibility and context is always key!

Replying/style of roleplay
When I’m feeling it, you can expect daily replies or more frequent. Sometimes life will get in the way. If we haven’t been roleplaying consistently for a month or more, if you disappear for a couple of weeks I’ll probably just assume a lack of interest unless told otherwise (no hard feelings either way). Feel free to contact me again if you wish. I’m open to rapid fire roleplays where replies are faster but significantly shorter, these are probably better to do on skype/discord/something like that.

Contact me
Feel free to email me (I roleplay mainly by email: zaychallenge@gmail.com) or contact me on google hangouts, using the same email address.
If you use something different for IM let me know, either way IM makes it easier to plot things on. I’m open to other platforms.

About that idea
It’s prehistoric, and characters would live as hunter-gatherers amongst a number of clans in a world of our design. Slight supernatural/fantastical elements included but nothing high-fantasy (pew-pew laser eyes etc.). Enthusiasm desired – expertise not required!

The start of the rp could open with the aging and experienced leader of one such clan completing a customary ritual, essential for their continued protection and prosperity. What is usually a time of celebration is instead a sombre occasion, fraught with anxiety. On their journey to the site of the ritual, the obsidian valley, they had suffered a number of losses from the harassment and ambush attacks of ever further spreading hostile clans which they had previously never encountered before.
In their usual migration, after the ritual they would journey on to places that have now become occupied by these foreign and apparently bloodthirsty peoples.
With the age and increasing fragility of their leader and this entirely new problem, they are forced to find a new chief and either venture to new places, away from all familiar and friendly clans as well as their new-found foes, or risk confronting their enemies directly and being subjugated by them.

I’m imagining this clan might be quite small and has always been passive, so how the individuals and the group as a whole deal with the outlook of being wiped out would be an interesting start. This is in addition to any problems a change in leader might cause – any internal conflicts are almost certain to come to a head.
Obviously not everything has to revolve around them – there’s a whole world of people out there we can invent and play with!

This long post is done.

Update 05/06/18: Just some minor wording changes and slight shifts in what I'm looking for.
Another edit 05/06/18: Added a couple of plot ideas, mainly suiting a medieval fantasy setup.

Hello

I’m 24, female, in the UK and studying full time. I present you with this ad - it's long, but essential. I’ve also included a writing sample for your convenience, which happens to be an intro from an ongoing roleplay that started last year.

Anyway, here’s what you want to know.

Yes:
Big casts of characters
Multiple storylines (some significant, others as interesting sideshows)
Original, but also worldbuilding
Chatting and plotting OOC, my best roleplays have always had this
Bonus - when I’m really inspired I like drawing and writing about more lore and ideas relating to the rp…if you’re the same, that’s great!

No:
“I only play females/males” OR great reluctance to play a gender
Smut-focused or exclusively wish fulfilment rps
Novella length replies out of obligation
Fandoms

Limits
Violence, anything is okay. Sex related, I don't fade to black and the only limits that come to mind are bestiality or anything with kids. I'll keep you informed if anything else comes up. However, just because my limits are quite few (I think?) that doesn’t mean our roleplay has to be a to-do list of depravity. Context and plausibility, always. Ideally, we’d have the same limits.

Replying

As you will know, when you post a roleplay ad, sometimes you get no replies and other times you can get a whole bunch. If I don’t reply pretty quickly I might already be trying something out; I rarely have the time to keep multiple rps going at once.
As for roleplay replies, it depends on what I‘m up to. When I’m very inspired and have quite a blank day, multiple posts. For any number of reasons, it could also be once a week or less.
If you don’t like how it’s going…

You could just ditch and that’s fine, but if we’ve been rping quite a while, say consistently for a month or two, it’d be nice to get a ‘thanks but no thanks’ so I’m not still planning my next post or writing other stuff for the rp. In return, I offer you the same. Don’t worry, no explanation or elaboration is needed – sometimes, priorities and styles are just never going to fit and talk won’t change that, or you've just changed your mind. It's fine.

Genres/themes

Bottom line is that I always avoid using Earth in my roleplays – worldbuilding from scratch is the holy grail for me, which is why I'm not lenient on the "plays many types of characters" rule. I have a few main areas I’m most interested in right now:
Prehistoric (Lots of ideas, but not specific plots; I'll need to email these to you)
Medieval fantasy (Couple of plot ideas below)
Futuristic dystopian, maybe (Nothing specific in mind)

Some themes I’m interested in, regardless of the genre:
Foreboding and bad omens, plague, superstition, supernatural*, cults, predetermined life, stark sects or factions, being followed and watched, resurrection/immortality at a price, destiny and symbolism, heroism, all shades of morality, greater beings meddling with lesser beings, deceit.
Definitely not an exhaustive list and yes, I have plenty of time for romance so long as it fits. If I'm roleplaying romance I'd prefer it to be M/F.

*I’d like it low-key for something prehistoric but can happily go higher for dystopian or med.fant.

Get me on google hangouts, it’s fun! If there’s another medium you’d prefer, I might be open to trying it.
I’d love to hear from you, whether you want to roleplay or even to chat, it’s all good to me. If you think you might want to roleplay with me, please tell me in your email what interests you from what I've written here, or your own ideas you may have.

A couple of specific ideas

The aurany
In the country of Ardach there is a tall, curving, marble-like and iridescent statue that emanates a protective power for miles. It wards against the corruption of the barrens that make up the land beyond the city. Within the realm of the aurany, people can flourish and cities grow. A strict religious order has emerged which guards the aurany to prevent it coming to harm, and for as long as the aurany has been in tact, life has been peaceful. But there is a wonder of what lies beyond, if the old lands, the barrens, can ever be restored and if the aurany is a prison more than a protector.

The barrens, on the contrary to their name, appear lush and fertile. They seem quiet and perhaps even welcoming. Yet, these lands have been overrun with creatures that would destroy humans in many ways.
There are stories of some people existing outside of the domain of the aurany, that they live perpetually watching their backs against the creatures that occasionally can be seen skulking around the periphery of Ardach; sentinel ghosts, vile snakes, tormentors, reapers and others, all of which are said to be under the control of a famed few once-human beings that became corrupted.
Then, it is also known that the barrens contain abandoned cities, echoes of a once powerful empire, but much knowledge of it, the source of the corruption and a solution therein, has been lost.

The cursed people
A city, Wystorn, lies to the far north of a Kingdom and at the edge of an empire. It is the coldest city, and sits within the gap of a mountain range, marking the passage between the tame southern lands and the free, supposedly ‘wild’ tribal lands beyond. Being so far from the capital and the attention of those in power, it has been neglected and increasingly is lorded over by the local nobles, rightly or wrongly, becoming a law unto itself.
Yet, Wystorn suffers some quite unique problems besides this. Rarely, people have been found that are capable of feats that defy human comprehension or exceed abilities of ordinary folks. These range from the trivial to the tremendous, and there are many tales about their origin and meaning. The law has called for any and all such individuals, believed to be the cause behind the recent events of ill-fortune in Wystorn, to be brought before the headsman. Many have been executed, but the reality is that many others suffer a very different fate. The powers of these so-called cursed people can be transferred to another person, cursed or not, if the correct ritual of death is performed. An array of hunters, buyers and collectors have set their roots in the Wysn province, illegally searching for cursed peoples with ever rarer and more profound talents, to further the interests of those that wish to amass their powers.

Sample intro

A word of warning, there is some gore in here.

A gloved hand pointed down the misshapen steps to a rough and imposing archway that lead the way into a corridor of stone.
"Ah, we're already here." The corridor itself was in disrepair, enough to see the snow at a distance in the openings between the blue-grey hue of its blocks in the long-abandoned building. Rubble heaped about the outside of it before that too fell away down the crags and pale slopes. Looking further down the slope, one could pick out slabs of what once was the adjoining watch tower itself.

"And the only way out is that cliff face, but I don't think he cares to run or hide." The other man remarked, noting the fresh tracks made below. It was rare to ever catch
wind of a collector, or anyone spending any length of time in the old district which had been reduced to a series of ruins such as the one before them.
Both of the hunters were covered head to toe just like any of the other citizens in Wystorn, in their thick robes and furs with the sturdiest of boots. In this part, the most exposed of all the districts where the snow became a fearsome ice, they wore their face masks beneath their hoods. Upon closer inspection, anyone could see they wore garments that were more refined than the commoners could afford. They were compact yet tough, stitched to make a tailored fit, so they moved freely and nimbly as they descended the steps toward the old watchtower.

"He won't come easily, not when he has a penchant for making brain soup. Or so I've heard." The first, known as Roak, spoke but they both knew the risks long before they came here, and as such they had come prepared. They already knew that the man was abnormally large and muscled. The fact that he had other 'gifts', which they thought were most likely in his stamina and tolerance of pain, just made him all the more of a foe to be treated with caution. Roak and Philes had put a good number of those with cursed blood to a premature rest, to the dismay of some of their nearest, but this was one creature that would not be missed by anyone. It made life a little easier in that sense; the man didn't need to be persuaded and drawn away from any family to meet his end.
"Of course." Came the other, lower pitched voice of Philes. "He doesn't want this one fresh." Even though the beast's heart would not be eaten later they'd still need to retrieve it, as their master took grave exception to anything less than proof of a job done.

As they drew near to the crumbling archway they fell silent. The pair didn't have any gifts of their own but had become especially good in identifying and capturing those that did. Philes circled around the side of the ruins, away from the crag, while Roak entered the ruins directly. Phile's footfalls were soft and practised, though as he approached nearer to where the stones began to fall away, he could see deep swathes of snow shunted aside. Curiosity piqued, he edged nearer to them and when he inspected further, he could see the ground had been churned up nearby. A scuffle? The cursed one was definitely here and didn't make any attempt at secrecy; he probably thought he didn't need to.
Carefully, he made his way to the lip of the slope, and listened. Between the whip and whistling of the ever-present northern winds he could hear nothing of his quarry. With another tentative step forward, he chanced a look downward. Finally, he saw the thick and copious flood of fresh blood. Immediately he wondered, whose? Philes remained still, letting his senses feed anything to him, but the ground below was deathly calm. Shifting his position, he then caught sight of...a limb?
Ah, foolishness.

He waved urgently for Roak to catch up to him and then gestured to the mess below. Roak's eyes first widened in surprise, then creased, perhaps with a hopeful smile.
What they didn't expect when they scaled the rocks to meet their prey, was to find their prey dead, and not just dead so much as cooked. There was no mistaking that this was the one they sought, now turned into an ugly form that hardly resembled a man, his skin crisped and charred in some spots and wet with blistering fat in other places. The rank smell of singed flesh made itself known and Roak wrinkled his nose in distaste, examining the body as Philes searched close by for the former owner of the leg.

"No good." Roak commented in harsh frustration, seeing that their prize had been destroyed, he cursed under his breath, looking about with suspicion. "Now we have to haul him back for nothing. How? Who could have?" It often took weeks, months, to track down individuals. They'd hear a tale from a stranger with a grudge, many of those would be false and some true. Then they'd travel near and sometimes far and begin their search, grow to understand their prey and eventually, they would then commence with capturing or killing as needed. Admittedly, this beast was quite a simple affair...but when the reward would have been so great Roak couldn't help but be angered. "I'll bet it's some damn purifiers again. Don't know what they're dealing with."

"Hey!" Philes called out, over his shoulder. "Get over here." He regarded the woman dispassionately, though with interest. Remarkably, she was still alive; he could see the rise and fall of her chest, but they didn't have time to waste.
"Gods. Shit!" Roak exclaimed; it wasn't hard to connect the dots. "Her?" He looked at the corpse of the beast again in disbelief.

"Definitely." Philes confirmed. "There's no other way, and furthermore, she's one of them." He lowered himself down and tugged at one glove, freeing his hand, he touched her forehead, cheeks, then her neck. Not cool or merely fading, she was innately and vibrantly warm. The smell of smoke and burnt tissue lingered about her. "So then."

"So...that's a second body to take back."
"Alive."

Introduction

Hello, thank you for clicking (:

First of all, ignore how old this thread is - I'll always be happy to talk rp!
A little about myself: I am a woman, 23 years old, in the UK, currently have a lot of commitments (though roleplay is my passion) and I'm shooting for a long-term roleplay of a specific nature.

What I want

I’m looking to create a world with someone that would be 'mesolithic' (think 12000 BC or earlier) with fantasy and supernatural elements preferably thrown in just for flavour in places. Good news: As this is a roleplaying website, I’m looking for a roleplayer, which means you don’t have to be an expert of any kind. I’m definitely not.
I have quite a few ideas already built up for this, but we don't have to use them at all if we find something else more appealing.

I’d hope for it to be a roleplay to explore survival and the many ways people might try to understand the world around them. An opportunity for us to world build to our hearts content, conjuring up the unique clans of people that populate our landscape, the things that bring them together or tear them apart, the host of characters within them, or even without them, that breathe life into the story. A chance to see where their beliefs, desires and the power of the natural world takes them for better or worse.
Being a fantasy world, while we could borrow heavily from our world there’s no reason we couldn’t also fill it with whatever more we want, so long as the general feel of the era is preserved.

How I roleplay

Here are some things you should know about me as a roleplayer. Ideally we'd match on all these, but if you want any clarification, or for any doubts to be put to rest, feel free to ask as I am an open book. If you decide to contact me (yay!) please tell me a bit about how you like to rp and where you stand on limits/post lengths and so on.

1. I typically post around 3 paragraphs, though frequently move north/south of that.
I tend to match my partners, but I always write 3rd person and past tense.

2. I am a low maintenance roleplayer and often busy. If you want multiple posts a day consistently, I’m not the one for you. If I’m anticipating being very busy for any reason, I’ll let you know.

3. For limits, I don’t have any interest in roleplaying children in sexual situations, scat or bestiality.
I feel I should make it clear (as these are common limits) that I have no problem with roleplaying gruesome violence, torture, rape, character maiming, suicide and others, but it must fit the flow of the story.

4. I love weaving in side characters of varying levels of significance and I would hope you can do the same, for me this is the really fun part of roleplaying. If this isn’t something you like to do I’m afraid we’re not going to roleplay well together.
We both need to be able to rp 'NPCs' as and when needed.
I rarely like to constrain myself to developing one character.

5. I roleplay men and women. I won't rp with anyone that insists on only playing one of these, or claims to rp both but in reality only does so nominally.

6. If a romantic and/or sexual storyline happens to come up, I strongly prefer m/f.
I also prefer not to fade to black, though it really depends on how relevant the situation is.
Important: As great as smut can be, I don't consider myself smut focused, and I don't like forcing chemistry between characters.

7. You must be 18+.

My main way of roleplaying is over email: zaychallenge@gmail.com. I’m happy to do hangouts.

I love using instant messengers for OOC purposes (it's very convenient) so if you can do that it's a big plus. Let me know what your preferred medium is in that case.

Introduction

Hello, welcome to my thread.
I’m a woman in her early 20’s in the GMT timezone, and like you, I'm on the prowl for a roleplay.

What I want

I’m looking to create a world with a fellow roleplayer that would be 'mesolithic' with fantasy and supernatural elements thrown in for flavour in places, though not pouring out of every character. Good news: As this is a roleplaying website, I’m looking for a roleplayer, which means you don’t have to be an expert on this time period.
Together we can accomplish great things such as a delicious roleplay supplemented by googling if needed.

Odds are, if you don’t get on with one of these, we’re going to have a bad time. If you want any clarification, or for any doubts to be put to rest, feel free to ask as I am an open book.

- 2 paragraphs is perfectly fine for a reply, even less if things are moving quickly, but more is of course normal and fine, particularly for introductions. So overall, I don’t really mind. Much more important is making sure we always have something to reply to in each other's posts.

- I am a low maintenance roleplayer and often busy. If you want multiple posts a day consistently, I’m not the one for you; I can do this from time to time, but not as a lifestyle. I am content to wait a week or more for a reply. What’s more important is our rapport and what we create together. I’ll take intriguing plotting and development with weekly posts over soulless daily posts.

- For limits, I don’t have any interest in roleplaying children in sexual situations, other than that I don’t think I have any limits.
I feel I should make it clear (as these are common limits) that I have no problem with roleplaying gruesome violence, torture, rape etc. so long as it fits the general situation. I'd like to roleplay with someone similarly flexible.

- I am able to double if asked. Doubling or not, I always greatly enjoy weaving in many side characters of varying levels of significance. If this isn’t something you like to do I’m afraid we’re not going to roleplay well together. If we do double, please be fair with the attention given to each of your characters.

- I have no problem roleplaying men or women, I ask for the same from you.

- If a romantic and/or sexual storyline happens to come up, I strongly prefer m/f. I prefer not to fade to black, though I suppose it depends on how relevant the characters involved are.

- You must be 18+.

Contact me

My main way of roleplaying is over email: zaychallenge@gmail.com. I’m happy to do hangouts.
I have a skype as well if that’s what you’d prefer to plot and/or roleplay over (email me if you want it).
