WHAT IS BARBERMONGER?

BARBERMONGER is a site designed to help roleplayers find other roleplayers, specifically one-on-one roleplayers, as opposed to larger roleplay games. Functioning like a pinboard, BARBERMONGER allows users to create advertisements, bump advertisements, and respond to other advertisements, without requiring them to register an account. However, registering an account will allow you to edit your posts, find your own topics, and use the private messaging system.

hi there! if you're looking for something unusual and different, read on!

i think most people are somewhat familiar with DnD (dungeons and dragons), but basically: think the roleplay you're already doing but more immediate, immersive, and unpredictable. the main mechanical difference is that there is a "game master" who alone knows what the story will be; we, as players, populate the game with one character apiece and experience the plot. the game master then controls the story, side characters, and the effectiveness of our characters' actions (using dice and character stats). there is a good deal of mystery and excitement that comes from not knowing what will happen next - and also character development and interaction as you journey forward with your fellow adventurers.

the reason i'm posting here is because i think a lot of us on this forum are interested in rich storytelling, strong characterization, and the empowerment of worlds and plots with our imagination. and the kind of DnD game i'm looking for will focus much more on the roleplay aspect over, for example, the minutiae of combat mechanics.

oh, and a little about me - i'm elise, i'm 26, and i'm a recent law school grad working as an attorney. i've been roleplaying for an embarrassingly long amount of time, from one-on-one's to groups to forums and everything in between. roleplay has always been something of a creative outlet for me, and i've made a few very close friends from it. it's definitely close to my heart! i'd consider myself pretty easygoing and laidback, and flexible about most things.

*update: we now have an experienced GM on board! she's introduced a bunch of roleplayers like us to DnD before, and she's happy to guide us through how to play (and how to make the mechanics accessible). so if you're pretty much brand new to DND (like me), don't worry about the learning curve!

looking for

ideally, i'd get a couple of interested people. once we figured out whether we meshed, we could then set up a small party to DnD together. i've heard the optimal party number is 3-5 (plus a GM), but i'm also happy to have it be smaller as we get our feet wet.

DnD is usually played and narrated aloud, which might be a skype or discord situation. i've heard this makes thing more immediate, tangible, and immersive. but i'm also open to doing it purely over text, or some combination of the two, depending on your individual comfort level. let me know!

preferences

i'm pretty flexible on most things, but the most important thing for me is good writing and characters with depth. i'm not so interested in all the details of combat mechanics and hack-and-slash - more so the idea of creating a compelling story together and having this rich/immersive experience. even if we end up playing the game aloud, i think there's still a good correlation in being able to write well and being able to convey a character. to that end, if you wouldn't mind sending me a writing sample (of anything at all), it would be much appreciated! i would be happy to reciprocate, of course.

again, i'm sure most people know, but DnD takes place in a medieval fantasy world, if that's not a genre that appeals to you.

i'd also prefer for you to be around my age, as i'd feel (for example) a little uncomfortable with someone who was 17 or 42.

if any of this strikes your fancy, i would love to hear from you! please let me know a little about yourself and your experience with DnD, as well as anything else you might think is relevant. as mentioned, a writing sample would also be lovely! and, of course, let me know if you have any questions. this is the first time i've done something like this, so it's likely i've left something out!

hi! i'm elise, and thanks for checking out my thread! a little about me: i'm 24, i'm a law student, and i have been rping for an embarrassingly long time. i am generally pretty flexible, but all i ask is for you to please be good at writing and be able to carry a conversation when we plot!

so i'm really interested right now in exploring: (1) luxury/decadence/control juxtaposed to servitude/helplessness/deprivation in some way, (2) mundane everyday situations and social relations that allow for terrible coercion and exploitation to develop, and/or (3) the gradual and psychological process of one character manipulating the other, using tactics such as charm or deception or blackmail to gradually gain more and more control. love (of a twisted sort) may or may not be involved!

i do roleplay other things (quite a lot of them!), but my current cravings revolve around these themes. to that end, the plots below all incorporate something to that effect. if you're 18+ (and only if, please), read on!

i am happy for this to be a fluffy romance that's largely consensual and kinky, and only slightly and teasingly "coercive". i am ALSO happy to explore a relationship that is genuinely cruel and nonconsensual and abusive (that possibly changes over time, or results in tables turned). or something in between. just let me know if you have a preference either way!

gender: i am most used to playing the male and/or "dominant" character in a rp, and i'm pretty comfortable with and happy to do it. but i think it'd also be fun to try out the other side, and i'd definitely have fun with that too! summary: i'm very flexible.

smut: ok, so this all sounds pretty smutty (and some of the plots more so than others), and if you want this to be smut-centric, i am good with that. my ideal, though, is probably something that also focuses on the characters, their emotions, and their relationship with each other, as well as the nature of power. if you want, i will fade to black for the actual sex parts!

writing: i will give you good writing and characters with depth. it would be great to get this in turn! at minimum, i gotta work with grammatically correct stuff and some realism as far as characters go. as far as quantity goes, i can write a LOT and and i can also write very little, depending on how much i have to say. i enjoy reading long posts, so if you're consistently prolific, i will not mind in the least - but if you like to have minimum word counts on everything, we might not work out! feel free to ask me for a sample of my work if you wanna get a feel for whether we'd mesh.

fandoms: i tend to prefer original stories to fandoms, but not always, so feel free to suggest! but please have a plot or idea (or incorporate mine) if you do. i may be interested in something related to harry potter or game of thrones, in particular.

plots

some of these are unabashedly cheap - you have been warned! these are in no particular order. the genders can be changed or swapped in these - the pronouns i happened to use are by no means concrete! nor are the plots themselves: i just listed all my ideas on a subject, so feel free to suggest variations or ax out parts that aren't to your liking!

modern

1. maid x employer. she's poor and destitute, working in the mansion of a man affluent to the point of excess. he takes a liking to her, but he has wicked tastes, and slowly decides he wants to own her absolutely - just another fixture he can add to his property. the way he does this is variable, but one potential method is to frame her: have her break a particularly expensive vase or something (set up, of course, so that it would almost assured tip over), and then threaten to charge her for the full amount. since she can't pay, she begs, and they work out a "generous" deal where she's basically an indentured servant, paying off a debt, and she moves in because she can't afford her rent now. he continues to use her debt as a source of blackmail, making more and more encroachments on her liberty. if stuff isn't cleaned correctly, she gets punishments of increasing severity. she's too slow, so she gets a collar that he can use to shock her at his whim. she chats too much on the job, so in goes a gag. it's a slow, insidious process, demeaning in degrees. as a variation, her employer could be "softer" about it, in the sense that they actually like each other and it's more consensual (and less extreme), though still messy.

2. gold digger x victim. she's beautiful and charismatic and a great liar, and she manages to win the affections of an exceptionally wealthy man. with her charms, it isn't long before she has him wrapped around her finger, and after they're married, she only winds him tighter and tighter around. he becomes addicted to her, and she uses that to her advantage, threatening to leave or coaxing him, until he's either (1) knowingly signed away virtually all his money and property to her out of a desperate love and desire to please her or (2) been tricked somehow into doing the same (perhaps she fakes his death and instead holds him prisoner). not content to leave him now destitute and heartbroken, she also makes it so that he becomes a servant in his own (previous) home, for her to torment and savor her victory. if we want the gold digger to be more sympathetic, it could be that the victim has wronged her before in the past, and she has been aiming for revenge for a long time.

3. plane crash / island survival. variation 1: a group of students from college, or maybe high school (if we want it to be closer to the source material) are the passengers on a plane that crashes, and they end up on an uninhabited island. in lord of the flies style, they go about constructing a society out of nothing, dividing into two groups of male and female, with different roles. at first, everything goes smoothly, but it isn't long before one group starts subjugating the other, eventually turning them into, essentially, slaves. we can explore this process, the resistance, etc. variation 2: the plane crash survivors comprise a man and multiple woman (or the other way around). he develops a relationship with each of them, turns them against each other, and generally solidifies his control over them, until he has a harem of serving girls that wait on him hand and foot.

4. bdsm gone wrong (or right!). a wife wants to try out a bdsm lifestyle, and enlists her husband. at first, she has to persuade and coax him into doing it, as he is reluctant, but soon he gets into it - too into it, and she gets more than she bargained for. roles could also be switched, like husband to wife, or they could be roommates instead.

5. high school. a wannabe tries to get in with a clique of popular girls. they use the opportunity to exploit and torment her, to increasing degrees of severity - at first, just getting her to carry their books, do their homework, run menial errands and stuff like that. then it progresses to sexual advances, public humiliation, etc. by this time, they have blackmail material in the form of compromising pictures (that they forced her to take), serving as a double layer of coercion. could also be a single popular boy or girl stringing along the unfortunate victim.

6. supervillain x hero's girlfriend: up to us whether they genuinely start feeling something for each other, or it's a result of a twisted kind of stockholm syndrome, or both!

7. childhood friends: i think it'd be fascinating to do something where the two main characters were best friends growing up, and when they meet again as adults, they're in completely different social spheres and economic classes - like one is a CEO and the other is a janitor in her building, or something like that. then we can deal with stuff like shame and condescension, familiarity and distance, friendship and hierarchy. maybe the more successful character was slightly bullied by the other one, when they were kids (despite being friends), so there also a thread of subtle resentment and malice (and also mutual shock that they've changed so much). we could also incorporate this relationship into any of the other plots.

8. other pairings: teacher/tutor x student, secretary x boss, celebrity x obsessive fan. i don't have plots for these, but we could probably borrow and alter elements from the other plots.

historical/future/au

9. helen of troy situation. bloodthirsty expansionist king is invited by a rival country to come to some agreement (out of fear they'll be invaded next if they don't reach some sort of peace). he goes, and at some point meets the princess there; this one encounter is enough to spark his desire for her, and as a man who is used to taking what he wants, he spirits her away to his own kingdom and forcibly cements their alliance by making her his wife and queen. he is cruel to her, especially in the beginning, thinking her only a trophy, but this possibly changes.

10. royalty. starts similar to the above: a king kidnaps a woman to be his wife and the new queen. she despises him for this (and perhaps he is also initially abusive, and harmed those close to her), but there is a power-hungry streak to her, and she is naturally adaptive and cunning. she plays to him, and begins gaining influence of her own, through him. over the years, this becomes more intense - perhaps she uses magic to enchant him, or drugs/poisons his food, or is just very good at sowing distrust in others and driving him further into her arms. she begins to alienate the king from others who might help him, and sets it up so that he makes blunders that she corrects. she replaces the guards with men who are loyal to her, draws the nobles to see her with their problems instead of him, and wins the affections of the masses with her charitable work. soon, popular perception is that she is the real power in the kingdom, and he is just the puppet.

11. handmaiden. two girls from well-to-do, noble families (which are nonetheless fairly modest) grow up together. one sabotages an opportunity for the other, and as a result, gains a very advantageous marriage in her place. now far more wealthy and living at court, the sabotager takes pity on her old friend and invites her to be her handmaiden and live at the palace. she assents. but it is difficult to be the servant to a friend who was once an equal, especially when that friend elevated herself at one's expense. the handmaiden resents her every day she combs her hair and performs her chores, until she decides that she will get vengeance. she plays sycophant to her lady, endearing herself to more menial tasks, and in return she gains trusts and secrets. she allies with an opposing family with a vendetta against her friend, sells her out to devastating consequences, and reaps the rewards.

12. venus in furs (1870 book). anything inspired by this!

13. anything jane austen. i know, this is completely random and separate from all the rest - but i've been rereading her stuff and i'm going through a phase, so this interests me too! it doesn't have to (but it could) relate to any of the themes above. i'm happy to brainstorm!

14. other pairings: royalty/noble x servant, king x harem, sorceress x enchanted victim, spoiled princess x hapless knight, vampire x human/hunter

12. dystopia. in the future, men have utterly subjugated women (or the other way around), and society has rearranged itself accordingly. women have reverted back to non-citizenship, treated as property rather than equals, and there is no propriety to curb the abuse. they are bought and sold, bodies modified to the liking of their masters, expected to be slavish and obedient at all times, etc. there is also an underground resistance group, comprised of both genders, who fight against this government and culture. two resistance members, a man and woman, are given the task of covertly gathering information. but to do so, they must blend into this society, and so the woman must pretend to be the slave of the man. they all reluctantly agree. but when they go undercover, it becomes difficult to resist the temptation of the dystopia and what it offers (for the person pretending to be the master), and the line blurs between what is real and what is fake.
