Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here it is.
I started a thread in the FANTASY forum: MASS INSOMNIA - HORROR FANTASY
This will be my first public rp, so... tra-la-da...be kind DX
I'm just gonna put a quick explanation here so people can join in if they want to. I'm not going to post any rules. No rules, just respect, you know? Don't be a dick. Shorter posts encouraged.
I really want it to be a no pressure kind of thing. That intro I worked on over 2 days, and have edited massively, but for the whole thing, I'd like it if people could just sling their stuff and press send. No worries about the random typo and here and there.
The premise is 25% of the New England population has come down with insomnia. It doesn't make them feel tired, it just keeps them up at night. It's been a month, and still no cure or explanation. Now, people's dreams (or nightmares, rather) have nowhere to go, and have begun to leak into the real world. They take over, transforming it into a Silent Hill-ish hell world, where people are forced to face the darkest corners of their psyches (or some shit like that).
Just want to see where it goes. Everything is up for interpretation.
My intro below:

[[overview for those interested in joining. All welcome. Just jump in.]]
Was it possible for idle dreams to build up in the brain after months of going undreamt? And if they were left too long, might they spill from the cavities in the skull, and seep into the waking world?
Timothy (smells like dung
) Mung's eyes were open. They were always open, always counting. Counting the beige, stucco nubs that dotted the ceiling. Counting the clicks of his box fan's blades as they rapped against the plastic frame, unsuccessfully beating back the mid-August heat. Counting the neon-green hours lit up on his alarm clock (4:29 AM). Slits of orange streetlamp light stretched across his bedroom, which was less of a room, and more of a walk-in closet. "A cozy apartment", the realtor's listing had said. As cozy as a satin-lined, pine box, six-deep in the earth.
Sleeplessness had descended on Tim a month ago, as quietly as the common cold. The first night, he’d blamed it on the double-shot Redbull he’d chugged halfway through his afternoon shift at Wendy’s. On the second night, he’d blamed his internal clock, which had probably taken too many knocks and late-night staring contests with his desktop monitor. It wasn’t until a week had passed that he caught the headline on a copy of The Dorchester Reporter
, left on the restaurant’s outdoor table among the scattered remains of a Combo #3 and #7.MASS INSOMNIA STRIKES NEW ENGLAND
22% of Dorchester residents had been affected, which was a little less than the average across New England. There was no pattern to it. People of all ages, classes and races had it (whatever it
was). Even stranger, those affected didn’t feel the symptoms associated with lack of sleep. In fact, Tim had felt more energetic in the past month, than he had the whole year. Suddenly he had an extra eight hours to fuck around, and what could be so bad about that? It wasn't until two nights ago, when the figure had appeared in the corner of his room, looming over his bed like it was waiting for him to get in, that he’d begun to change his tune.
It had been 4:42 AM. Hunched at his desk, Tim had felt a creeping sense of dread. It was the kind he felt when he laid in bed, one foot dangling over the edge of his mattress where some thing
might grab it. It raced through him, raising the hairs along his arms and neck, chanting, don’t look behind you. But he had.
The figure had been dark, untouched by the street light, or the computer monitor’s blue glow. It was like staring into a starless sky, endless–like all his sleepless nights had multiplied and stacked, like reels of film, each layer leaving the sum darker than the last, until the darkness was too dense to be pierced by the eye. Its shape was that of a human shadow, stretched and warped so that it towered from floor to ceiling. Tim had stared into it, sure that the moment he looked away would be his last. In the hours between then and sunrise, the figure didn’t move, didn’t make a sound. And when the morning light slipped through the blind’s slats, it faded with the rest of the shadows. The next night, it returned. 4:42 on the dot.I might die here.
The thought flickered in Tim’s mind. He shifted his weight from one butt cheek to the other, causing his desk chair to squeak. Why not? Average people had heart attacks every day for no apparent reason. He’d read about kids sitting at their computers for hours, a lethal clot forming in their legs while they grind their level 100 Paladin. They never saw it coming.
Tim slurped from his Cup of Noodles, which had gone cold hours ago. Maybe this soup of carcinogens and monosodium glutamate would do him in forty years from now. Maybe his twilight visitor was the start of a brain tumor, sprouting in the center of his gray matter. They’d catch it late. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had a doctor’s appointment. Then it would take its sweet time, gnawing away at his insides until there was only rot. But not tonight. Tonight he was preoccupied with the volcanic zits on PrincessButtercup94’s nose. It turns out his high school computer lab course (the one class he’d attended regularly) had paid off. He was just proficient enough in Photoshop to make a quick buck correcting photos, mostly headshots for wannabe actors.
Tim squinted at the clock in the corner of his screen. 4:37. Ten more minutes, and he might have been able to finish PrincessButtercup94’s face, but the memory of the figure waiting over his bed made him shudder. Not tonight. Tim was still dressed in his plaid, flannel pajamas when he headed out the door. He'd received them in the mail from his mother last year on the day before his 27th birthday. Included in the package was a bag of Aji Ichiban dried mango and a crisp twenty dollar bill. No card.
At 4:42 AM, Tim crossed the empty cul de sac, fingers jammed in the holes of his pants pockets. He didn't notice that the sky, black and brooding, had smothered the stars, and swallowed the moon.

Come ready to collaborate
I want to swap ideas and discuss where the rp is going with you. It's important to me to have an open line of communication through out the rp. I do not like writing in silence. I do not like writing without a plot.
Spelling and grammar mistakes aren't a big deal to me. I'm sure you'll find quite a few as you read on. I care more about style, quality of interaction and character development. That said, I need to be able to understand what you're writing.
I will not give a length minimum, but I expect the post to have content that goes beyond the actions of your characters. Need flavor. There are some instances in which short posts are appropriate, and preferred, such as action scenes or conversations. I like conversations to progress naturally, rather than each character monologuing, touching on each point the other character made as they try to address everything said. Does that make sense?Limits

All fandoms will involve OC. I'm more interested in playing in an established universe than writing established characters.
While some of the plots listed involve romance, I am also down to write platonic relationships, especially if it becomes clear the characters would never attract each other.
If you don't see something on here that interests you, suggest! What's the worst that could happen?Plots
Scroll to bottom for Genres+FandomsAlice in Wonderland
Alice goes down the rabbit hole into an nightmarish Wonderland. There, she meets another girl, also named Alice. She's sickly, an absolute wreck. She doesn't know who she is, or where she came from. All she can remember is that she was supposed to do something, and she failed. The two set off through Wonderland in search of A2's lost identity and a way home.
If Alice in Wonderland doesn't appeal to you, I'd be more than happy to drop it from the plot. AiW only inspired it; it can stand without it.Ex-Superheroes / Ex-Villains
A mysterious disease that strips mutants of their powers is spreading. The world is left vulnerable as its superheroes fall to the disease, while the remaining supervillains wreak havoc.
An ex-hero and ex-villain, both affected by the disease, meet as civilians. Drawn together by their mutual disillusionment, maybe was FWB to start, not wanting to think about the other's (or their own) pasts. They bond as they learn to navigate their new lives, coming to terms with what they were, what they are, and what they want to become.
Maybe the hero wants to try to keep hero-ing about, and to recruit the villain to join her. They both have skills unrelated to their powers (martial arts training, weapon proficiency etc.). We write out what that's like for them, and the ways they clash trying to work together.Taboo 1940's/50's
My knowledge of history is severely limited, so you'll have to bear with me. I'm imagining these two housewives, neighbors and friends. One whose husband died in the war (or comes back severely changed? whatever seems more interesting). The other housewife starts spending more and more time with her, supporting her through this tough time. They develop feelings for each other, we see how it goes...
Or... maybe we start the rp before the husband comes back, with both women developing feelings then... theeeen the husband comes back.Pirates/Fantasy
This one is mad cliche, but whatever (also, I have absolutely zero detailed historical knowledge, I kinda bumble through these things like a fool, and twist and bend to have my way).
Two women grew up together in the slums, fell in puppy love as teens, then went separate ways. 1 becomes a soldier in the navy, other a pirate (for the sake of I feel like it, men and women’s roles were switched in this rp, so all ships full of women).
Later on in adulthood, their ships clash, reuniting them. Soldier gets captured, pirate is all, I don’t know what to do. I enjoy it because it’s driven by their emotions, now having to process shit that went down in the past, and figure out how to move forward in the now annnnnd then the pirate captain, using some treasure thing, transports them all to some crazy magic land (mermaids and dangerous creatures afoot), so the pirates can grab some swag that would be worth lots in the regular land.
At some point, the pirate+soldier get separated from the big group, and must then work together to survive/get home. Also, if you have any interest in starting the rp with them as adolescents? It’s an idea I’ve been toying with…. Wondering if it would make the impact of their reunion that greater…spose if it doesn’t work we could always nix it and skip ahead.Ex-Bestfriend x Ex-Bestfriend
This is another one that involves two characters with a history, very similar to the last. Two friends grew up in the same small town. From elementary to high school, they were inseparable. Then, some big bad happened (to be discussed), and they split after that. One went to college far away, some big city, and has become a bit of a hot shot. The other never really left home.
Years later, hotshot returns home for (reason to be discussed, perhaps a sick parent). Hotshot and homebody are reunited for much awkwardness and tension.
This is a pretty bare bones idea. I'm down to get into the nitty gritty and build on it, throw in fantasy/supernatural elements, whatever.Genres
Fantasy - both modern and otherwise, just be warned that my historical knowledge is severely lacking
Superheroes / Supervillains - from Kim Possible's to Justice League's
Slice of Life
Supernatural / Horror
Gifted / MutantsFandoms
Gattaca - I'm interested in writing an rp about two characters in Gerome and Vincent's situation
Harry Potter - I'm not a hardcore fan, so most of the details are lost on me, but I'm still down

1. I enjoy plots that are focused on more than getting the pairing together. In fact, if it becomes clear that the characters are better friends than lovers, I'd prefer to explore their platonic relationship. Boo to the rom-coms!
2. Fandoms. I only play original characters, and would actually prefer you play one as well. I'm much more interested in taking an existing universe and playing in it, than writing someone else's characters.
3. Literacy. Give me more than your character's actions. Give me something to play off of. Help me plot along the way when things get sticky.
Limits. I don't write out the details of sex. I'll write how my character acts during it and how they feel about it, but I'm not going to give you the nitty gritty. Think Hollywood vs. porn. Everything else is ok.
These are just some plot ideas I've come up with. If you have any ideas of your own that are related to the categories in bold, tell me! I love suggestions!
Super Heroes + Super Villains
- A mysterious disease is spreading. It takes away super-humans' powers, turning them into ordinary people. For some, the effects are worse than others. People with healing abilities, for example, are left with debilitating health problems because their bodies no longer function correctly. The villains who have yet to contract the disease are running amok. The world is shell shocked as it watches its most glorified heroes fall ill.
A hero and villain, both struck by the disease, are drawn together over their mutual loss and disillusion. Both are coming to grips with what they were, what they no longer are, who they want to be, and how they feel about each other.
- Rival heroes/villains
- Hero x Villain
Sci-Fi (ish?) Stuff
- There is a machine that, upon receiving a sample of your blood, spits out a receipt that tells you how you will die, in three words or less. Some people get "peacefully", other get "burned alive", and some results have been as strange as "canned ham". Since its invention, the machine has never been wrong, despite the many attempts people have made to defy it.
Our characters meet at a support group for those whose receipts say "Murder" (open to other ideas taking place in this world, inspired by Machine of Death)
- SPACE PIRATES! Pirates are engaged in battle against galactic soldiers. Both ships go down and crash on an untamed planet (with craaay alien creatures). Soldier(s) and pirate(s) are forced to work together to escape/survive.
___ Post-Apocalypse (Zombies, nukes, mystical whatnots, could be mixed with gifted)
Vampires, Slayers, Ghosts, Demons etc.
- I have the seed of an idea about a shop that sells cursed items that poses as a pawn shop. Only those connected to the magical world are aware of what goes on in the back. A unwitting human is hired as a cashier to work in the front, make things seem normal.
One night, she is closing the store alone. She's drawn to an artifact, and ends up unleashing an ancient creature (creature tbd by writer). The creature emerges, ready to re-take its place of power in the world, only to discover that it is 'chained' to the human who released it. It cannot travel further than 5000 ft from the human. If the human is ill or in pain, the creature feels it. If the human dies, so does the creature.
Vampire x Slayer
Non-human x Human
Fantasy (Present and future)
- I have a plot that I've been craving to try! I'd love to brainstorm further...
- In some ways, removing the original characters turns this into any other superhero rp, but I think there are some specific ideas here that set it apart. I think the strange powers (manipulating dairy products) and the way they are based on the characters personality are interesting. I also enjoyed the casual take the series had on "heroes". The Misfits crew were, very much, just ordinary people, trying to continue being ordinary. I would be down to keep that vibe.
I guess Harry Potter?
- I'm not an avid fan, so my knowledge of the series is less detailed than most, but I've always enjoyed the world in general, so here it is on the list.
- I know. I'm a dork. Could be interesting to do something with two characters in same situation as Vincent and Jerome.
