WELCOME TO BARBERMONGER
WHAT IS BARBERMONGER?

BARBERMONGER is a site designed to help roleplayers find other roleplayers, specifically one-on-one roleplayers, as opposed to larger roleplay games. Functioning like a pinboard, BARBERMONGER allows users to create advertisements, bump advertisements, and respond to other advertisements, without requiring them to register an account. However, registering an account will allow you to edit your posts, find your own topics, and use the private messaging system.

(i know there's already a topic on romance but i wanna ask a different set of questions sooooo)

hi i have some questions for the roleplayers out there who require romance in their rps! theres a wide variety of characters out there and obvs not all of them are compatible or would necessarily start hitting on each other if you just put them in contact long enough, so, i wanna know like have you ever:
  • had a discussion about characters personalities and prefs ooc, before you start roleplaying, in order to make sure they'd work together & tried to tailor them to each other? if so, how in-depth do you go with this?
  • changed your character mid-rp to be more compatible w/ another character?
  • consistently made characters designed to have like, maximum compatibility w/ other characters? or avoided making certain types of characters bc of how it might affect romantic opportunities?
  • ditched a roleplayer (whose writing you otherwise liked) bc their character wasn't romantically compatible w/ yours? and ( a ) told them about it? and ( b ) told them the truth about why?

discuss!

I nearly always have detailed discussions about the characters before hand, or at least request a detailed personality description of their character and give them some characters I am thinking about. I want them to, at least eventually, be compatible. That requires some planning beforehand, because some people will never be compatible.

I do not change my character unless there is a good reason. I might have a character who is prejudiced to start, but after getting to know the people they are prejudiced about, they have a natural realisation they were wrong. A character might have a life-altering, traumatic event which shifts their personality fairly drastically, too. In either of these cases, however, I almost always plan it from the start.

I make characters as they are. Some are very difficult to find a partner for. I have a pathological liar, and she has never fit into an RP for very long. I still have hopes that she will someday find love. XD I think she is an interesting character, and she does not mean harm with her lies. She just can't help herself, sometimes. She likes to brag, and it comes from a deep-seated need to be liked. If a character can recognise that and handle it, they could work together, but it's probably going to take just the right character.

If I like a roleplayer, I like a roleplayer. If the particular RP is not working, I will tell them and ask that we come up with something new or even start over with a change of cast. Orrrr sometimes we will discover that our mains are not compatible, but some side characters we introduced are actually perfect for pairing with the mains, so it ends up being a natural doubling.
